July 15th. Reception Class had their memories tested today when we played Kim's game.

We had 10 natural objects on the mat and the children had to memorise them.
-
Then Sarah took one thing away each round and the children had to work out which item had disappeared.

Next we got busy with the clay.

July 1st. Reception Class made wood cookies today.
-
We learned how to use the bow saw to cut a disc of wood off a dead branch.
-

Then we used a palm drill to make a hole in the wood cookie.
-
We drew a picture on our wood cookie.
-
We threaded a piece of yarn through the hole to make a cool necklace!
-
Some finished wood cookie necklaces.

We even fitted in some tree climbing, den building and a game of Foxy, Foxy Can We Cross Your Field!

June 24th. Today Reception Class learned about the Japanese art, Hapa Zome.
-
We placed flowers and leaves between a fold of fabric and hit them with a hammer.
-
We thought carefully about our designs.

There was a lot of den building happening this afternoon too.

June 17th. Reception Class enjoyed listening to the Cave Baby story this morning.

We used the charcoal that we made last week to draw some pictures to decorate the forest.

We did a bit of cloud spotting.

Then we went roly-polying down the hill. It was terrific fun!

June 10th. Reception Class had a very busy session today. We put last week's peeled willow into a tin, put the lid on and put it into the fire.
-
Then we started to make French Toast (or Eggy Bread!) First we cracked 6 eggs into the bowl.
-
Next we added 2 cups of milk.
-
Then we put in 4 tablespoons of sugar.
-
We added some cinnamon and vanilla extract and gave it a good mix.
-
We got the pan hot on the fire and melted some butter.
-
We dipped slices of bread into the egg mixture and cooked it over the fire.
-
Then we put honey or jam onto our French Toast and ate it. Delicious!

We took the tin of willow off the fire and let it cool. When we took the lid off, we saw that it had turned into charcoal!

June 3rd. Reception Class started their session with a walk for the senses.
-
We described all the things that we could see, hear, touch and smell.
-
This tree trunk felt rough and bumpy.
-
We love the sound of the wood chimes. We could also hear the wind in the trees and hear the birds singing.
-
We peeled some lengths of willow in preparation for making them into charcoal next week.
-

We are getting very good at using the peelers.

We all enjoyed a game of Spot at the end of the session.

May 13th. Reception Class started their session with a plant and flower matching game.

Then we used some lengths of willow to make crowns.

April 29th. Reception Class toasted marshmallows on the fire today.

Some of us just ate marshmallows...

We broke some stones looking for fossils.

April 22nd. Reception Class played Sleeping Bear this morning.

Can you steal the bear's food before he wakes up and catches you?

We used palm drills to make a hole in conkers.

Then we used a crochet hook to thread some yarn through the conker.

We made these fabulous conker necklaces!

April 19th. Class 2 had a trip out to the burn and surrounding woodland.

We climbed a very steep hill...

...and had fun sliding down again!

We found lots of interesting rocks.

April 15th. Reception Class played Bat and Moth this morning.
-
Bats find their food (the moths) using echolocation. The bat claps and the moth claps back so that the bat can try to work out where they are.
-
We discovered that it is quite tricky being a bat!
-
Then we went bug hunting with bug viewers and magnifying glasses.
-

-
We found worms, woodlice, beetles, millipedes and an enormous spider!
-
Looking under logs was a good place to find bugs.
-
We love worms!
