December 16th. Reception Class had a chocolate coin treasure hunt in the forest this morning.

We all found one shiny gold chocolate coin each!

We used the kelly kettle to boil water and we made hot chocolate.

It was delicious!

December 13th. Class 2 enjoyed a chocolate coin treasure hunt.

We searched everywhere until everyone had a chocolate coin.

We coloured in some pictures and Christmas cards for our Ruby Robin Challenge.

We made some willow Christmas wreaths.

We boiled water in the kelly kettle to make hot chocolate.

November 29th. Class 2 have are participating in the Ruby Robin Challenge this winter.
-
The Songbird Survival Trust charity have developed the Ruby Robin challenge to help children become aware of songbirds and how to help them.

Our first challenge was to make some mosaic bird feeders.

We played Creeping Coyote which involved moving through the woods stealthily to steal something from the person on the log without being heard.

November 27th. To celebrate National Tree Week, Reception Class played the Tree Game. We pretended to be different woodland animals...

...then we stood by a tree. If our tree number was picked, we were out. We kept going until we had a winner.

After our game we did some bark and leaf rubbings with wax crayons.

November 22nd. Class 2 toasted waffles on the fire today.

They were delicious with jam.

November 20th. Reception Class listened to a story all about Meg and Mog.

We had a go at making magic potions just like Meg in the story.

We mixed up soil, leaves, acorns, conkers and lots of other things we found in the woods.

We added water and mixed the potions up.

November 15th. Class 2 toasted marshmallows and made s'mores this afternoon.

November 13th. Today I read Reception Class the Leaf Man story. We loved the pictures made of leaves.

We have so many leaves on the ground at the moment, we worked together to make a giant nest we could all fit into.

November 8th. Class 2 (Years 3 and 4) enjoyed crafting with conkers today.

We made some conker necklaces.

November 6th. The forest had a glorious carpet of golden yellow and brown leaves this afternoon.

Today Reception Class made conker necklaces.

We used a palm drill to make a hole through the conker.

Then we threaded the conker onto a length of yarn and made a necklace!

We moved a tyre so we could climb onto this branch.

It was easier to reach the branch from the tyre.

We sat at the top of the hill to do some peaceful bird spotting.

October 23rd. Reception Class played a wildlife matching card game this afternoon.

We hunted around in the woods to find a matching pair of animals or birds.

We talked about the animals and birds that were on our cards.

The fire was lit ready for us to cook toffee apple slices.
-
Using the cooking sticks that we made last week we cooked a slice of apple.
-
Then we dipped the apple slice in brown sugar and cinnamon and toasted it again.
-

October 18th. Class 1 started their session hunting for mini chocolate pumpkins.

We all found one each.
-
We got busy making things with conkers.
-

Some of us used elder sticks to make some beads again.

The kelly kettle was put on to boil water.

We enjoyed a hot chocolate with a biscuit.

October 16th. Reception Class learned how to use the loppers today.

We measured the willow and cut a piece the same length as our arm.

Then we peeled one end of our willow stick and sharpened it to make a cooking stick for next week.

We played the Name Game and Scatter too.

We love hiding when we play Scatter!

October 12th. Class 1 started their session with a game of Bat and Moth. The bats have to use echolocation to find their prey!

We used elder sticks to make a variety of different things. We used the secateurs to cut the length we wanted.

Then we used palm drills and crochet hooks to hollow out the elder sticks.

October 9th. Reception Class toasted marshmallows on the fire today.

A few games of Scatter were great fun.

We went looking for Autumn signs. We found leaves as big as our faces!

In the Secret Garden we found apples ready to pick.

The apples were fresh and crunchy.

We found an enormous gym ball in the Secret Garden and played football with it on the field. What a busy afternoon!

October 4th. Class 1 did some cooking today.

We were making woodland apple crumble.

We put all the ingredients into the dutch oven and took turns stirring it.

It was very hot and bubbly!

While the apples were cooking, some of us drew charcoal pictures.

The apple mixture was ready!

We served it with a crumbly biscuit.

Everyone tried some.

Most of us thought it was delicious!

October 2nd. Reception Class practised approaching and kneeling at an unlit fire today so that we are safe when we cook on the fire next week.

To celebrate Red Squirrel Week we talked about how squirrels collect nuts and acorns in autumn and bury them for wintertime.
-
We pretended we were squirrels and went hunting for acorns.
-
Green acorns were easier to find than brown acorns.
-
We tried to spot some squirrels and birds.
-
We climbed trees.
-
We looked in dark, damp places for woodlice and beetles.

We made a train.
-
At the end of our session we played a hide and seek game called Scatter.

When the leader calls 'scatter' everyone has to hide!

September 25th. Reception and Class 1 did lots of painting in the woods today.

We made natural paints by mashing blackberries and elderberries and adding a little water. We also added water to some soil to make mud paint.

The blackberry and elderberry paints smelled fruity and sweet!

We were proud of our woodland art.

September 18th. Class 1 and Reception Class joined together for Forest School today.

We made bird feeders with pine cones, lard and bird seed.

We hung the bird feeders on the trees.

Some of us used a compass to find which way is north, south, east and west.

We peeled some sticks with a vegetable peeler.
-
We did some bird spotting with our new binoculars.

September 13th. To celebrate Roald Dahl Day, we read an excerpt from Fantastic Mr Fox.

Some of us made Forest Friends out of sticks, fabric and yarn.

We used the peeler to make a face for our Forest Friend.

September 11th. Reception class enjoyed exploring the woods for the first time today.

We went hunting for bugs.

We found woodlice, worms, slugs and beetles.

We climbed trees.

We had fun in the hammock.

We found lots of interesting things in the woods and had lots of fun!

September 6th. Class 1 talked about the three things a fire needs - heat, oxygen and fuel. We collected fuel for the fire and lit it.

We toasted marshmallows on the fire.

Then we made s'mores.

They were finger lickin' good!
-
Some of us hunted for bugs.

We needed lots of branches and wood for our den.
