December 15th. Reception Class had a Christmas treasure hunt in the woods today.

We were searching for shiny foil wrapped chocolate Santas!

Then we used the Kelly kettle to boil some water.

We made delicious hot chocolate to drink.

As a special treat, Sarah brought cake for us all, to celebrate Sarah's 20 years of working at Broomhaugh!

December 15th. It was Class 1's last session before Christmas so we started off with a chocolate treasure hunt.

It was' fun week' for the final week of the Ruby Robin Challenge Award. We made some Christmas cards and did a wordsearch.

We finished with a game of Foxy, Foxy Can We Cross Your Field.

December 8th. Reception Class listened to the story Meg and Mog this afternoon.

We enjoyed looking at the book.

Then we got busy making our own magic potions.

We added woodland ingredients and water.

We gave them a good stir.

December 8th. Class 1 started their session with a game of Funky Monkey.

Funky Monkey is great fun and warms up our bodies and our brains!

Our third challenge for the Ruby Robin Award was to do a bird spot. We talked about the songbirds that we could see and hear in the woods.

The children decided to move the giant bird's nest that they made last week.

December 1st. To celebrate National Tree Week, Reception Class played the Tree Game.

We scampered around the woods like woodland creatures before finding a tree to stand beside, hoping not to be out!

December 1st. To celebrate National Tree Week, Class 1 chatted about why trees are so special.

Then we played the Tree Game. We had to scamper, hop and fly around the woods like woodland creatures then find a tree to stand beside.

The next challenge for our Ruby Robin Award was to learn about songbirds.

We talked about some facts in our songbird booklet.

Then we enjoyed colouring in a Ruby Robin picture.

November 24th. Reception Class made a nest today.

We had to make the nest big enough for everyone to fit in it!

Once we were in the nest, Sarah read the Leaf Man story to us.

We loved spotting all the things made of leaves in the story.

In the woods we learned how to use a hammer and nails safely, by hammering nails into pumpkins.

November 24th. We had been given some pumpkins so Class 1 had fun hammering nails into them.
-

This is an excellent way to learn how to use a hammer and nails safely.

Sarah has signed us up for a Ruby Robin Award through the Songbird Survival website. The award is to help and learn more about songbirds.
-
Our first challenge was to make fruit bird feeders.
-
We cored apples and pushed sunflower seeds into them. Then we hung them up on the trees.
-

We also made a bird bath.

Some of the children were inspired to make a very fancy Bird House/Hotel, complete with lots of food for them to feast on!

November 17th. Reception Class enjoyed making Conker Comets this afternoon.
-
We placed a conker in the middle of some strips of crepe paper.
-

Then we twisted the crepe paper around the conker and tied a piece of ribbon around it.
-

We took our Conker Comets to the yard and had a competition to see who could throw theirs the furthest.
-
-
We loved throwing them high up in the air too.

November 17th. Today Class 1 made Conker Comets.
-
We wrapped a conker in tissue or crepe paper.
-
We tied it with yarn or ribbon.
-
We cut some flame shapes.
-

Then we took our Conker Comets to the yard.

We had a competition to see who could throw their Conker Comet the furthest.
-
Then we saw who could throw their Conker Comets the highest.

Friday 10th November. We found a broken giant mushroom in the woods and Reception class had a good look at it. It was very beautiful.

We cooked toffee apple slices over the camp fire.

Friday 10th November. Class 1 toasted pancakes over the fire today.

We ate them with honey and they were delicious!

Today this tree was a horse and the girls went riding.

October 26th. Class 2 have been learning all about the Stone Age, so we had a Stone Age themed Forest School session today.

We made beads and jewellery using elder sticks.
-
We cut short lengths of elder stick.
-
Then we used the palm drills to hollow out the beads.
-
We threaded the beads onto yarn to make jewellery.
-

We also did some experimental artwork using mud, blackberries and charcoal.

We didn't have cave walls to paint so we used the fence, cardboard and paper.

October 13th. Class 1 cooked toffee apple slices over the fire today.

We cooked the apple over the fire, then dipped it into some cinnamon brown sugar and held it over the fire again until the sugar melted.

We made lots of super things with conkers.

We used palm drills to make a hole through the conkers.

Some of us put sticks into the holes to make something.

Others threaded the conkers onto yarn to make necklaces.

October 13th. Reception Class made willow cooking sticks today.

We learned how to use peelers safely to whittle a sharp end on the willow stick.

A bucket of conkers was great for investigating. When we open a conker shell we are the first person in the world to ever see the conker inside!

October 6th. Class 1 celebrated the recent World Animal Day by starting the session with a game of Bat and Moth.

Bats find their prey using echolocation. When the bat claps, the moths clap back and the bat has to try and catch a moth!

October 6th. Reception Class had their first Forest School fire today.

Then we sandwiched the marshmallow in between two biscuits and added a small square of chocolate.

September 29th. Reception Class had fun hunting for acorns today.

We added a little bit of water to our blackberry paint.

September 22nd. Class 1 went on an acorn hunt to start their session.

The green acorns were easier to find than the brown ones.

Everyone prepared a willow cooking stick as we hope to toast marshmallows next week.

We made some feeders for the birds.

We threaded cheerios onto pipe cleaners and hung them in the trees and bushes.

We put lard onto pine cones and dipped them in bird seed.

September 22nd. Reception Class made bird feeders today.

First we tied a length of yarn around a pine cone.

Then we spread lard onto the pine cone.

Next, we dipped the pine cone into the bird seed and rolled it around.

The bird seed sticks to the lard and makes an excellent feeder.

Then we hung the feeders up in the trees.

September 15th. Class 1 started their rainy afternoon with a game of Foxy, Foxy, Can We Cross Your Field?

We headed to the woods to play and make some Forest Friends.

We played a wildlife matching game.

We had to hunt for matching pairs of pictures.

When we had found them all we sat on the logs and talked about the animals, birds and insects on our cards.

Then we went off to explore. Some of us went hunting for bugs.

We spotted unusual things growing in the woods.

We had fun raking up leaves and sticks.

We learned how to play a hide and seek game called Spot. It was lots of fun!

September 8th. Class 1 helped to move all our tyres back up to the woods today.
