March 30th. Class 2, Group 1 started their session searching for the chocolate chicks and bunnies left by the Easter Bunny!

March 30th. The Easter Bunny has been!

We went on a hunt for little chocolate chicks and bunnies hidden around the woods.

We all found one and they were delicious!

We did some hapa zome - the Japanese art of leaf bashing.
-
We put flowers and leaves between pieces of fabric and hit them with a hammer.
-
The dye from the leaves and flower petals prints onto the fabric. Beautiful!

March 24th. Class 2, Group 2 started their session with a hunt for something.

The Easter bunny had come a little early and hidden a chocolate bunny for everyone!

Next we went onto the field and played Bat and Moth. The blindfolded bat used echolocation to catch the moths.

Then we got busy making and playing.

March 23rd. Reception class went hunting for signs of Spring this morning.

We searched all over the school grounds and found lots of spring flowers, buds and new leaves.

When we reached the woods we had been given a challenge by someone in Year 3. We had to search the fortress for some hidden woodland figures.
-
We had to look really carefully but eventually we found them all!

We had fun playing Spot.

March 17th. Class 1, Group 1 started their session with a new game called Bat and Moth.

Bats catch their prey using echolocation; when the blindfolded bat claps, the moths clap back...
-
...the bat uses the sound echoing back to help them catch the moth. We had great fun playing a few rounds of this.
-
After the Bat and Moth game we went up to play, explore and create in the woods.
-

A big fortress was built.

We used the hacksaw to cut some small lengths of chunky sticks.

We whittled the tops a little bit.
-
Then we made some woodland folk.
-

Some of us made beautiful woodland mobiles.

A few of the group put screw eyes in the tops of their woodland folk so that they can be hung up.

March 16th. Reception class started today's session with a miniature matchbox scavenger hunt.
-
Working in pairs, they went to find out how many different things they could fit into a matchbox.
-

We came back to the circle to count out all the little things we had collected..
-

-
The highest number we had was 16 different tiny treasures in a matchbox!
-
Next, we played a hiding game called Spot.

Behind a big tree is an excellent place to hide.

We also had fun chalking...

...and playing the woodland xylophone.

March 10th. Class 2, Group 2 had a slightly snowy session today!

We toasted marshmallows on the fire and made s'mores.
-
We cooked popcorn to celebrate National Popcorn Day.

We had a go at hapa zome, or leaf bashing.

We put rose petals and fern leaves in between fabric and hit them with a hammer.

We made some beautiful art!

A little snowman was made. He was called Kevin.

Two teams competed in the Longest Line game.
-
Some of us were so competitive we even shed several items of clothing to make our line longer!

The lines were extremely long!
-
We finished our session with a few rounds of the hiding game Spot.

March 9th. A snowy morning in the woods!
-
We caught some snowflakes on black card and looked at them closely with our magnifying glasses.
-

Some of us chose to make log dogs again.
-
We drew faces on our log dogs.
-
We walked our log dogs around the woods.
-
What a super snowball!
-
We still like to climb trees in the snow, but we are extra careful as the trees are slippery!

March 2nd. Class 2, Group 1 had a go at the Japanese art of hapa zome today.
-
Hapa zome is also known as leaf bashing. We put petals and leaves on a piece of fabric, covered them and then hit them with a hammer.
-

We made some beautiful pieces of art.
-
Meanwhile we had the campfire going and cooked popcorn and toasted marshmallows.
-
We made s'mores with the marshmallows because they are one of our favourite things to make and eat!
-

The popcorn was delicious too.

We played a team game called Longest Line.
-
Each time had six minutes to make the longest unbroken line that they could.
-
We had great fun and it ended in a draw with two incredibly long lines!

March 2nd. To celebrate World Book Day, Sarah read Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy to Reception.

We discussed our favourite dogs from the story.
-
Then we all found a log to make our own log dog. We used a lark's foot knot to attach a string lead to our log dog.
-

Then we took our log dogs for a walk.
-
We had very large dogs...
-
...and smaller dogs.
-
After our walk, some dogs were tied up while we went to play.
-
Other dogs were fed, taught tricks or taken to the vets!
-
One or two dogs even had a go in the hammock.
-
Someone made a little tree for their log dog to feed from!
-

February 16th. Class 2, Group 2 made lentil dahl today.
-
We looked at all the ingredients and started cooking it over the fire.
-
-
-
Meanwhile we got busy making friendship bracelets and God's Eyes.
-
Some of us enjoyed whittling sticks.
-
-
We also put lots of food out for the birds.
-
Just hanging around in the hammock!
-
We gave the dahl a stir occasionally.
-

-

When the dahl was cooked, we ate it with some naan bread.

It was delicious!

At the end of the session we played some games of Spot and Creeping Coyote.

February 16th. Reception Class were thinking about birds today in Forest School. We started off reading In My Nest.
-
We listened to bird song in the woods and talked about how, when and where birds make their nests. Then we built some nests for Little Robin.
-
We found sticks, feathers, leaves, catkins and scraps of yarn to make our nests.
-
-
We think catkins look like caterpillars!
-
-
A lovely perch was found for Little Robin while all the nests were being made.
-
Lots of exploring went on this morning.
-
A hammock is a great place to lie quietly and watch the birds in the branches above.
-
-
Little Robin even had a catkin scarf!
-
Little Robin loved all her nests and we had lots of fun building them.

February 9th. Class 2, Group 1 were looking forward to cooking lentil dahl today.
-
We had a look at all the ingredients we needed.
-
We started off by frying some onion.
-
Then we added garlic, ginger, spices, tomatoes, coconut milk, stock and lentils and left it to cook.
-
Meanwhile some of us got busy making friendship bracelets.
-

Some of us made a God's Eye.
-
In Mexico the people used to make God's Eyes to ward off evil.
-
We had to remember to stir the dahl occasionally.
-
Some of us chose to whittle sticks with the peelers.
-
-
When the dahl was cooked we warmed up some naan bread over the fire.
-
We added some spinach to the dahl and served it up.
-
Some of us were a little unsure about trying something new, but almost everyone tried some dahl.
-
Most of us loved the dahl and we ate it all up - lots of us had seconds!

Delicious!

We enjoyed playing games with our friends.
-
At the end of our session we talked about what we had enjoyed and showed the group the things that we had made.

February 2nd. Class 2, Group 2 enjoyed making up and telling a story for National Storytelling Week.
-
Half of us had a natural object, and the other half picked an object from a story bag.
-
We then went around the circle, creating a story as we went, incorporating our objects. It was a very funny story!
-
Meanwhile, the kelly kettle was put on to boil.
-
We enjoyed a warming hot chocolate.
-

Then we got busy being creative, playing and exploring.
-

Some of us made a variety of different bird feeders.

We used our new hand drill to make a simple bird table.

February 2nd. To celebrate National Storytelling Week, Sarah started the session by telling Reception class the story of the Three Little Pigs.

We then toasted marshmallows on the campfire.

January 12th. Class 2, Group 1 started their session with an introduction to the Kelly kettle.

We filled the kettle with water and set it over the fire underneath.

When the water boiled we added powder and a splash of milk and enjoyed a cup of hot chocolate.

Some of us wanted to whittle sticks with the peeler.

We play lots of games in the bushes!

The hammock is a great place to relax.

We used the bow saw to cut wood cookies from a fallen branch.

Some of us then used the hand drill to make a hole in our wood cookie.

January 12th. Reception class enjoyed being back in the woods this morning.

We read the Stick Man story then some of us made our own stick people.

We used the peeler to peel off some bark, then we used colouring pens to draw a face on our stick person.

Some of us chose to give our stick people some clothing too!

Then we took our stick people on an adventure through the woods.

This stick man was climbing trees.
